A performance system for the violin and electronics, currently in development. Multichannel variable delay is the foundational framework of this project, used to explore new spatio-temporalities in improvisation. Delays and spatial sound movement are controlled by gesture. As sound becomes increasingly complex, unpredictable, and dispersed in space, the performer must intuitively navigate a multidimensional musical terrain as they construct it.
The system is concerned with the transhuman ethos of expansion and boundary-blurring coupled with an immaterial, attention-based approach to listening. I draw upon Pauline Oliveros’ Expanded Instrument System, Laurie Anderson’s cyborgified violins, Pamela Z’s gestural mastery, feedback/networked performance practices of Gordon Mumma and David Tudor, and work and writings by George E Lewis, Mari Kimura, David Borgo, and Donna Haraway as inspirations for this project.
